Adriana Ocampo
Scientist-Planetary Geology

The stereotype of a Latino is "weak in math", the stereotype of a woman is "weak in math". Before me stood Adriana who defied the stereotype and plots courses for satellites for a living. It was a no-brainer, a satellite should be the background. The same light that lit the satellite was used for her in this photograph.

Orlando Agudelo-Botero
Artist

Both father and uncle are prominent painters. Orlando has art galleries in Miami, Hawaii, and Laguna Negal in Southern California. I remember that he always wore the same paint stained pants and shoes for painting but always a clean and neat shirt. The photograph was taken in his studio in Laguna Negal.

Dr. Aliza Lifshitz
Medical Leader & Educator

Aliza’s husband is also a Mexico native with a Germanic Surname. She is a General Practitioner, her office is in Beverly Hills. Her credentials and a magazine with her picture on the cover hang on one wall and medical books cover another. What made her successful is displayed on both walls, this is what it takes to become a successful doctor. I placed her at the corner between the two walls. I knowingly violated a rule "do not center your subject", but this was the best location to tell her story.

Victor Villaseñor
Best Selling Novelist &
Screenwriter

Victor’s father had a deep dislike for cowboy movie star Tom Mix. According to Victor’s father, Tom Mix spoke openly about his dislike of Mexicans and often derogatorily. This inflamed Victor’s father and at some point he broke into an empty house previously owned by Tom Mix and took measurements of every room. When he finally built his own home, he purposely made every room larger than the measurements he had taken. This was his personal testament to his Mexican heritage that his home was larger than that of at least one movie star and specifically that of Tom Mix. In the photograph, Victor stands in front of that very house in San Diego, California. Victor has now moved to Tucson, Arizona but plans to keep the house in the family.

Lydia Villarreal
Consumer/Environmental
Protection Attorney

We went into different courtrooms but the settings and the light just didn’t seem to be right. The outside of the courthouse seemed more suitable for the background, and it exuded stability, strength, and a conservative nature. Lydia is framed by the doors and columns and looked absolutely comfortable in those surroundings. She was definitely in her element, not intimidated by the justice system and eager to make it work for her clients.

Eduardo "Lalo" Guerrero
Singer & Composer

I went to a restaurant in Palm Springs, California where I new that Lalo performed on occasion. He was expecting me and thought that the photoshoot would take place in the restaurant. Instead, I took him outside into the courtyard and asked him to sit on a stool and play one of his favorite songs.
