Chapter 2-   Cabello and Sanchez Families Merge
Letter to Refugia Sanchez from Juan Cabello asking for Loreto's hand in marriage. The original letter has been preserved and framed. It has been photographed (12/7/2024) rather than scanned to continue its preservation. The document as of 12/7/2024 is in Ruben Cabello's possession. The translation is not always word-for-word but in some cases required paraphrasing.

Ozona, Texas
Señora Refugia Sanchez,
Now, with joy I direct these humble written lines to you wishing that when they are received you will find them joyful.
So, I am well thanks to God. And now after greeting you I am moving forward with telling you the following and please do me the favor of pardoning my poor writing: Truthfully, you may be unaware of how much I love your loving daughter, and in reality I wish to be happy with her, and only your blessing is missing,

I know that you love her and want her happiness, right?
Well you understand me and know who I am and that you understand everything about everything that makes her happy and about me making her happy. And at the same time I beg of you to do me the favor of not responding (to this letter), I don’t mean to be demanding but I’ve thought about coming over at the end of this month, and so it is your answer that I will wait for and be assured that even if your response is not a favorable one I will conduct myself at your

Yours Truly,

The Cerna-Martinez Connection
A few excerpts from the newspaper article "Hard Work Is Key to Cerna Success" by Sam Churchill, Yakima Sunday Herald
Sunday, March 31, 1957
        Lost Holdings
When Tomas and his wife, Phyllis (Felicita) were married in Chilchata Michaucan, Mexico in 1904, Cerna was a wealthy land owner. His hands were soft and white and every afternoon he settled down for a quiet siesta.
But along came the revolution. The Cernas fled across the border and started a new life in the United States from the ground up. The only assets salvaged were a few clothes, their two hands and the will to work.
        Moved to Valley
Eventually they became successful farm operators in Wyoming. In 1940 they sold out and came to the Yakima Valley after receiving glowing letters from two sons, Albert and Jess, who were already in the Valley. Tomas bought a small place and raised some hops on the South Wapato Road. Later he bought 80 acres near Harare and in 1945 bought 10 acres on the Fort Road where the family home now stands.
        Owns Houses
He bought a 200-acre farm on the Marion Drain and leased part of land here and there. Earlier this year he sold the 200 acre section, taking part of the payment in Columbia Basin land. With his farming operations rounded out he built a few houses on the Fort Road property for rental purposes and put in a small grocery store.

Life in the Tiny House
On 7 Dec 2024, I took pictures and measured the Tiny House.
It was 24 feet by 10 feet for a total of 240 square feet. This does not include the water closet. The two large windows (front and side) were within the kitchenette.

Lower Left is the chicken coop, I was amazed that it was still standing. It is about 20 feet from the right side of the Tiny House.

Lower Right is the addition to the original "Big House."

Maria Yolanda, Jose Manuel's oldest daughter was her father's and mother's caregiver until their passing. She is the current resident of the "Big House."
This property is currently worth over 2 million dollars

Circa 1949: The photo shows the entrance to the Tiny House (without water closet).  At that time it stood alone surrounded by open fields.
Eddie looks to be about 18-24 months old.

Below: Eddie is in an open field surrounding the Tiny House.

Chapter 8-   The Final Gathering of the Three Families
THE OBITUARY HE NEVER GOT BUT RICHLY DESERVED

I remember as a youngster sitting in a theater waiting for my father to perform. I remember watching him sing and play his guitar. I must have been about 5 or 6 years old because I can only recall bits from memory of that event.
THIRD GENERATION STRUGGLES AND SOLUTIONS
The Story of Us is a video (10 min) of the 1975 Martinez-Magno wedding  with overtones of the evolution/importance of the Folk Mass movement. This part of Chapter 8 is the section on "incorporating Folk Music in church" page 87.

Incorporating the "Folk Mass" into our wedding, empowered us to shape the ceremony in a way that was most meaningful to us. We brought in a Pastor from another church to officiate and we created our own vows (unusual for that era).
